Liverpool are reportedly close to officially announcing their first signing of the summer, with Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong set to join from Bayer Leverkusen, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Frimpong has impressed at Leverkusen, emerging as a standout performer and helping the club win the Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season. The 23-year-old’s move to Anfield is expected to cost around €35 million and is seen as a strategic replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is departing the club on a free transfer.
Frimpong’s offensive style, honed as an attacking wing-back in Germany, could fit well with Liverpool’s tactical approach. While Alexander-Arnold’s departure leaves big shoes to fill, Frimpong’s creativity and energy are seen as a strong alternative, though his defensive abilities may come under scrutiny.
Liverpool journalist Peter Kenny Jones commented that Frimpong’s arrival brings both promise and risk, especially with the presence of Conor Bradley in the squad. Bradley’s injury history made signing another right-back a necessity, and Frimpong offers a fresh, albeit different, style of play compared to Alexander-Arnold.
There’s also speculation that Frimpong might not be the only player Liverpool signs from Leverkusen. Reports suggest that German playmaker Florian Wirtz is also close to agreeing to a five-year deal with the Reds, having turned down other major offers.
