Chelsea are making moves to bring back former academy player Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, entering discussions with Borussia Dortmund over a transfer worth around £50 million. The club aims to finalize the deal before the FIFA Club World Cup begins in the U.S. on June 14.
The 20-year-old England U21 winger, a standout performer at Dortmund, has become a key target for Chelsea this summer. Though he previously played in Chelsea’s youth system, Bynoe-Gittens moved to Germany in 2020, where he’s flourished—most notably helping Dortmund reach the Champions League final and becoming the youngest English player to score in the competition earlier this season.
Chelsea reportedly showed interest in him back in January and have now reopened negotiations, looking to quickly seal the move. His current contract at Dortmund includes a release clause around the £50m mark.
Bynoe-Gittens has also caught the attention of England’s interim manager Lee Carsley, and although he’s been part of the U21s setup, he won’t feature in this summer’s European Championship due to his club commitments at the Club World Cup.
This potential signing comes amid uncertainty over Jadon Sancho’s future. Sancho—another former Dortmund winger currently on loan at Chelsea from Manchester United—must either be bought for £20–£25 million or returned with a £5 million penalty, due to conditions in the loan deal.
Chelsea have already made one offensive signing, securing Liam Delap from Ipswich Town for £30 million. They’re now focused on Bynoe-Gittens, who is seen as one of Europe’s top young English talents. The club is expected to face LAFC, Flamengo, and Espérance de Tunis in Group D of the Club World Cup and wants to boost its attacking options ahead of the tournament.
With Christopher Nkunku likely to depart after two underwhelming seasons and the club also showing interest in Alejandro Garnacho, Chelsea is clearly building a dynamic, youthful attack to suit new manager Enzo Maresca’s vision. Bynoe-Gittens could prove to be a perfect addition to this new-look squad
