Liverpool’s attempt to sign one of Europe’s brightest midfield talents may be under threat — and not for the usual reasons.
The Bundesliga’s standout playmaker is reportedly close to finalizing a high-profile move to Anfield, but his participation in Germany’s Nations League matches could now put the deal at risk.
As reported by Bild, Florian Wirtz is “on the brink of the biggest German transfer in history,” with Liverpool preparing to seal a €150 million agreement.
However, the publication cautions that the entire deal could fall apart if Wirtz suffers an injury while on international duty this week.
A private jet was reportedly dispatched from Manchester to Cologne to conduct medical evaluations on the 22-year-old while he’s away with the German national team.
Despite progress in discussions, nothing has been finalized yet.
“If Wirtz gets injured, it could jeopardize the whole deal. Liverpool might try to renegotiate the price or even withdraw completely.”
Germany is set to face Portugal on Wednesday, and Leverkusen are understandably nervous.
They are eager to finalize the deal quickly, especially after previously turning down a €130 million offer from Liverpool.
Multiple sources, including Sacha Tavolieri on X, report that Wirtz is only interested in joining Liverpool, and negotiations between the clubs are ongoing.
If completed, this transfer would break records for both Liverpool and German football. But any injury could still derail it.
