Respected journalist James Pearce has shared fresh insights into Liverpool’s ongoing pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.
Wirtz, a standout talent for Leverkusen in recent seasons, is considered one of the brightest young midfielders in global football.
According to Pearce, Liverpool have done an excellent job convincing Wirtz of their vision, despite interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
Speaking on The Athletic’s “Walk On” podcast, Pearce discussed the status of the transfer following reports that Liverpool had a bid turned down.
Pearce believes that both Liverpool and Leverkusen are likely to reach a middle ground eventually.
Florian Wirtz to Liverpool remains likely, says Pearce
David Ornstein previously revealed that Liverpool submitted a second offer worth £109 million, which Leverkusen rejected. Despite that, negotiations continue.
“There’s a strong sense from both sides that a compromise will be found,” said Pearce. “Wirtz has shown a clear desire to join Liverpool, which is a big advantage. While many expected him to sign for Bayern, Liverpool have clearly positioned themselves well.”
Pearce added that sources indicated Liverpool’s main goal was to be the leading option if Wirtz decided to leave Germany — a goal they seem to have achieved through a compelling pitch.

Securing Wirtz would be a massive signal of intent from Liverpool, especially after clinching the Premier League title.
