Sky Sports has reported that Florian Wirtz has a specific preference that might affect one of Liverpool’s current fan favourites, should he make a move to Anfield.
The 22-year-old German star is said to be keen on joining Liverpool, despite Bayer Leverkusen rejecting two previous offers. The Bundesliga side reportedly values him at around £125 million, according to Christian Falk, and Liverpool are expected to return with an improved bid.
A minor but noteworthy factor in the negotiations is Wirtz’s desire to wear the number 10 shirt—currently occupied by Alexis Mac Allister. The report from Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg suggests Wirtz favors the number, although he typically wears 17 for the German national team—a number held by Curtis Jones at Liverpool.
Though this preference could be a slight complication, it’s unlikely to hinder a potential transfer. Wirtz is not considered the type to insist on such matters. Bundesliga analyst Mark McCambridge told Liverpool Echo that the playmaker is unlikely to cause issues over shirt numbers.
If he can’t get the number 10, Wirtz might opt for number 27, which he wore previously at Leverkusen. That number is currently free at Liverpool following Darwin Núñez’s switch to number 9.
