How Manchester United Could Line Up with Cunha and Mbeumo After £125.5m Spending Spree – and What That Means for Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United are wasting no time this summer as co-owners Ineos, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, push to revamp the squad after a disastrous Premier League season. The club has already secured a £62.5m deal for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo also reportedly keen to join in a £50m transfer.

These moves raise questions about how new manager Ruben Amorim will reshape his team—especially with Bruno Fernandes rejecting a lucrative move to Al-Hilal, opting to stay at Old Trafford despite an eye-watering £700,000-a-week offer.

SunSport explored three potential formations for next season, assuming additional signings in key areas like goalkeeper, central midfield, and attack. One lineup includes Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez in goal, a defensive trio of Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, and Leny Yoro, with Fernandes deeper in midfield alongside Brighton’s Carlos Baleba—renowned for his defensive work rate and recovery stats.

Wing-backs Amad Diallo and Patrick Dorgu would provide width, while Cunha and Mbeumo operate up front with Aleksandar Mitrovic—possibly returning to the Premier League from Al-Hilal—completing the forward trio.

Other formations explore different player options, including goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic or Zion Suzuki, and midfield alternatives like Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton. Amorim might also adopt a two-striker system if he reunites with Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres.

Despite Fernandes’ deeper positioning in some setups, many believe his best performances come when he plays just behind the striker—something Amorim may return to if needed.

Transfers out will be key to funding these plans, with the likes of Rasmus Hojlund (linked to Inter), Marcus Rashford (Barcelona), and Alejandro Garnacho (Chelsea or Napoli) all reportedly attracting interest.
