Gary Neville has once again made headlines with a new prediction about Liverpool—this time acknowledging their strengths but still not backing them to retain their Premier League title.
Last season, the former Manchester United star confidently predicted that Liverpool wouldn’t even make the top four, a claim that backfired as the Reds went on to become Premier League champions under Arne Slot’s debut season.
Speaking on the It’s Called Soccer podcast from the US Overlap channel, Neville shared his outlook for the upcoming season, giving a nod to Liverpool but ultimately choosing Arsenal as his title favorites once again.
“I’ve got to go with Arsenal again to win the league—I’ve backed them the last two years, and they’ve finished second in each of the past three seasons,” Neville explained. “I didn’t back them the first time; I went with City. But I’ve stuck with them since.”
In doing so, Neville glossed over the fact that Liverpool were the actual league winners last season—proving his fifth-place prediction wrong in spectacular fashion.
To his credit, Neville did acknowledge Liverpool’s strong transfer moves, particularly the signing of Jeremie Frimpong. “Wirtz is a fantastic signing,” he said, also referencing potential deals for Frimpong and Milos Kerkez to address full-back positions. “If they manage to complete those three signings quickly, it would be smart business—but I expect nothing less from Liverpool.”
It’s a far cry from the skepticism Neville showed just a year ago. One thing’s clear: after Liverpool’s dominant title win, Neville will likely be more cautious before counting them out again—especially if they aim to go back-to-back next season
