Tyler Morton was not included among them, making only five senior appearances since August—four of which were in domestic cup matches.
Now 22, having celebrated his birthday last October, Morton previously gained valuable experience on loan at Hull City and Blackburn Rovers. However, the recently ended season was frustrating for him due to limited first-team opportunities.
Looking back, Morton described the past season as the most mentally challenging period of his career so far. Liverpool chose not to send him out on loan for the 2024/25 campaign, a decision that left the young midfielder somewhat disappointed.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, he said, “This has been the toughest season mentally for me. I’ve managed it fairly well with the support of those around me, but it’s been very hard. I’ve coped as best I could.”
Despite consistently strong performances when given the chance and receiving praise for his positive attitude from figures like Neil Mellor, breaking into Liverpool’s starting eleven remains difficult. With intense competition in midfield—and possibly more if Florian Wirtz joins—the Wallasey-born player is likely to continue struggling for playing time unless injuries create openings.
A recent shoulder injury also restricted his playing time, but he has now fully recovered and could be an important player for England’s U21 team as they defend their European title.
His future at Liverpool seems uncertain. According to James Pearce of The Athletic, Morton is ‘expected to leave’ in search of more regular first-team football.
Approaching 23 in October, Morton has made only 14 senior appearances for Liverpool. By comparison, Harvey Elliott, who is five months younger, has appeared nearly 150 times, while Ryan Gravenberch, five months older, started 37 league matches just in the 2024/25 season.
Given these facts, it’s understandable why Morton may feel discouraged by his limited role at Anfield. If he opts to move on, many clubs would likely be interested in giving him regular playing opportunities
