Alisson Becker has expressed his belief that Liverpool will likely exercise their option to extend his contract by another year, while also sharing his dream of eventually returning to his boyhood club, Internacional. Despite looming changes in Liverpool’s goalkeeping lineup this summer, further discussions are expected at a later stage.
Having now won the Premier League twice, Alisson has firmly established himself as a vital part of the Liverpool squad and one of the top goalkeepers in the world during his seven years with the club. In 2021, he signed a contract extending to 2026, which includes an optional additional year that Liverpool can activate.
By the time his contract nears its end, Alisson will be 35. Speaking at a press conference ahead of Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Peru, he shared his thoughts about the club’s likely decision to trigger the extension.
“I’ve never really been able to make long-term plans. Right now, I have one year left plus an optional year, which the club will probably take up,” Alisson said.
Still, his current priority is helping Brazil qualify for the 2026 World Cup, meaning any contract discussions with Liverpool are not at the forefront of his mind.
“It’s a crucial point in my career with the World Cup ahead. I want to stay fully focused and not let outside matters become a distraction.”
Alisson was also asked about potentially returning to Brazil, like Neymar Jr., Thiago Silva, and ex-Liverpool teammate Philippe Coutinho, who all recently moved back to play in their homeland.
“I’ve spoken to players who’ve made that move—some had good experiences, others not so much,” he noted. “But I do want to go back, especially to Internacional. I’m not sure when it’ll happen, but I want to return while I can still perform at a high level. That’s part of my plan.”
Alisson came through Internacional’s ranks from age 10 and made his senior debut at 20, amassing 101 appearances before moving to AS Roma.
For now, Liverpool fans can expect to see more of their star Brazilian, even as the club undergoes some reshuffling in the upcoming transfer window.
