Harvey Elliott may have fulfilled a dream by lifting the Premier League trophy with Liverpool in May, but the 2024/25 season likely left him with mixed emotions. While the team celebrated success, Elliott spent much of the campaign sidelined—first by injury, then by competition for his position.
The 22-year-old had been seen as a potential key figure during Jurgen Klopp’s final year in charge and showed determination during tough spells. Many hoped new head coach Arne Slot would offer Elliott the breakthrough he deserved.
Slot’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system seemed ideal for Elliott’s skillset, and strong pre-season performances suggested he could secure the central attacking role. But that hope quickly faded when Dominik Szoboszlai was favored in that position. Elliott then suffered a fractured foot early in the season, delaying his return until December.
By the time he was fit again, Liverpool were performing well, and breaking back into the team proved difficult. Although he had bright moments—scoring in the League Cup, contributing assists in January, and netting a vital Champions League goal—his starts remained limited. A costly mistake in the FA Cup further stalled his progress.
Even when he showed promise, Elliott was mostly used as a substitute. It wasn’t until after Liverpool had secured the title that he started in the league again, shining with a goal and assist against Brighton.
However, his future at Anfield is now under more pressure as Liverpool intensify efforts to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz. The German international plays in the same role Elliott has tried to make his own, and his likely arrival could reduce Elliott’s chances even further.
Slot has praised Elliott’s late-season improvement but emphasized the fierce competition within the squad. If Wirtz joins for a record fee, he’s expected to become a central figure immediately.
At 22, Elliott is reaching a turning point. He has the ability to thrive in the Premier League, but whether that’s with Liverpool remains unclear. If playing time continues to elude him, a loan or transfer might be necessary to kickstart his career.
