Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo says he’s unaware of Bayern Munich’s interest as the Reds close in on signing Florian Wirtz
Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo has stated that he hasn’t heard anything about Bayern Munich showing interest in him. Speculation has grown that Liverpool might sell some of their forwards, including Gakpo, to help finance a potential deal for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.
Liverpool are currently negotiating with Leverkusen over Wirtz, with their latest offer of £100 million plus £13 million in add-ons being turned down. However, Liverpool are expected to come back with a final bid of £118 million, which would set a new Premier League transfer record.
As Liverpool looks to bring in a new star player, the futures of Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, and Luis Diaz are uncertain. While Nunez has been linked to Atletico Madrid and Diaz to Barcelona, Bayern Munich is reportedly interested in Gakpo after missing out on Wirtz.
According to Mirror Football, Liverpool manager Arne Slot is keen to keep Gakpo, who played a crucial role in winning the Premier League title last season. Gakpo himself seems focused on staying, dismissing transfer rumors while preparing for the Netherlands’ 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Finland.
“I haven’t heard anything about it myself. I’m blocking it out,” Gakpo said. “Maybe my agent has heard something, but I’m concentrating on my own game.”
Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven for £40 million in January 2023. At 26 years old, with three years left on his contract, he has scored 41 goals and provided 17 assists in 128 appearances, making him a key player for the future.
Bayern’s interest is linked to the expected departure of Leroy Sane, leaving a vacancy on their left wing. Bayern thought they would secure Wirtz but the 22-year-old preferred Liverpool instead.
Gakpo is expected to be a tough signing for Bayern given his satisfaction playing under Slot, who adjusted his position to left wing this season — a change Gakpo views as significant.
“He’s helped me a lot, changing my role slightly and giving me the opportunity to prove myself,” Gakpo said. “The manager and staff are focused on helping all players develop smarter and improve in scoring and creating chances.”
