Liverpool are on the verge of agreeing a fresh contract with captain Virgil van Dijk, coming shortly after Mohamed Salah renewed his deal with the club.
According to Pete O’Rourke via the Inside Track podcast from Football Insider, both contract extensions are estimated to surpass £100 million each in value, especially considering the high cost of replacing top-tier players like Salah and Van Dijk.
Despite being in their early 30s—Salah at 32 and Van Dijk at 33—both are seen as essential to new head coach Arne Slot’s vision. Van Dijk is expected to agree to a two-year deal, similar to the terms Salah accepted when he re-signed on April 11.
Liverpool have long been confident in retaining their two senior stars. Reports from December suggested that renewals were already in the works, though complications arose when Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future became uncertain amid reported interest from Real Madrid. The original aim was to extend all three contracts at once.
While securing Van Dijk and Salah is a major win for the club, Liverpool continue to assess defensive options. Scouting efforts for new centre-backs began in February to address future needs in the backline.
Looking ahead, West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen is being considered as a possible long-term replacement for Salah, with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak also on the club’s radar.
Despite these positive developments, a significant reshaping of the squad is anticipated under Slot’s leadership. Former Manchester United scout Mick Brown predicts that as many as ten major players could exit in the near future.
Among those who could move on are Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konaté, Robertson, Van Dijk, and Tsimikas. The futures of Salah, Luis Díaz, Darwin Núñez, and Diogo Jota also remain uncertain
