Liverpool Fans Think Trent Alexander-Arnold Regrets Real Madrid Move After Hearing Fans’ First Chant
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid is already raising eyebrows among Liverpool supporters, who believe the defender might be second-guessing his decision after hearing his new club’s fans chant for the first time.
Although his Liverpool contract was due to expire at the end of June, Real Madrid paid a £10 million fee to bring him in early and ensure he could play in the newly formatted Club World Cup starting Sunday.
The English right-back will be officially introduced as a Real Madrid player during a presentation at the Bernabeu on Thursday—two weeks after the transfer was finalized.
When Alexander-Arnold showed up for the unveiling, a crowd of Madrid supporters greeted him outside with applause and a chant of “Arnold” to welcome their latest star signing.
However, Liverpool fans weren’t impressed. Many claimed that Alexander-Arnold’s facial expression during the chant made it clear he was already regretting his move to Spain.
Outside a medical center in Madrid, the 26-year-old met with club officials while being serenaded with the “Arnold” chant, just a day after it was reported that he would be giving up his iconic number 66 jersey due to La Liga’s rule that squad numbers must be between 1 and 25. He’ll now wear number 12.
In a surprising twist, the England international has also opted to use his first name, “Trent,” on the back of his shirt instead of his last name.
Liverpool fans took to social media to point out that Madrid supporters hadn’t picked up on this change, continuing to chant “Arnold” despite the rebrand—something they believe will irritate the player.
One fan on X joked with a laughing emoji, “Shouting ‘Arnold!’ after he’s just rebranded everything to ‘Trent.’”
Another added, “‘Arnold’ chants… yeah man, I know he’s already regretting everything.”
A third fan commented, “He used to have so much aura… what happened?”
Alexander-Arnold becomes the second player unveiled by Madrid this summer, following Dean Huijsen, the former Bournemouth defender and Xabi Alonso’s first signing, presented on June 10.
While his exact debut date hasn’t been confirmed, it’s possible Alexander-Arnold could make his first appearance for Real Madrid as soon as June 18, when they face Al Hilal in the Club World Cup.
