Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has stunned fans with a startling statement in a recent Madrid interview. The 34-year-old Spaniard, who left the club in 2023 after 12 years, expressed his desire to return to Manchester United during the upcoming January transfer window—but only if one significant condition is met.
Despite the bitter end to his time at the club, De Gea said his affection for Manchester United remains strong. “I have always loved this club and still do. I watch every game and wear the badge with pride. I’d come back immediately if I could,” he shared emotionally.
However, De Gea was clear about what must happen before he returns. “My comeback will only happen if a certain player is sold. He was the main reason I left, and the dressing room changed after he arrived. Until he’s gone, I won’t come back.”
Though De Gea didn’t name the player, insiders hint he means André Onana, the current goalkeeper whose arrival coincided with De Gea’s controversial departure. The two reportedly clashed over training and tactics, with De Gea feeling marginalized under manager Erik ten Hag—a tension that may have persisted under new coach Ruben Amorim.
Amorim is reportedly considering bringing De Gea back either as a backup or mentor due to concerns about Onana’s form. But De Gea’s demand complicates these plans.
“I want to help United succeed again,” De Gea concluded. “But harmony in the dressing room comes first. That player and I can’t be at the same club. That’s final.”
