Liverpool Closing In on Florian Wirtz Signing

Liverpool appear to be on the verge of making a blockbuster signing. On Tuesday night, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that the club has reached a verbal agreement in principle with Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz. The total value of the deal, including potential add-ons, could hit €150 million (£127 million). According to journalist Graeme Bailey, the transfer might even be finalized by the weekend.

The potential move has drawn attention across Europe and comes with strong endorsements—especially from one of Wirtz’s Germany teammates, who plays for a major Premier League rival.

Ilkay Gundogan’s Praise for Wirtz

Speaking earlier this year on the TRS Podcast, Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan spoke highly of Wirtz and fellow Germany international Jamal Musiala. As reported by The Mirror, Gundogan said:
“They’re very close to being world-class. Maybe not quite there yet, but they have the potential to become the best in the world very soon. I’ve played alongside them for Germany over the last two years, and they consistently deliver at both club and international level. They’re top talents and great individuals—it’s only a matter of time before they hit the peak.”

Why Wirtz Could Be a Game-Changer for Liverpool

Having played with Wirtz 16 times for Germany, Gundogan is well-placed to comment on the 22-year-old’s immense potential.

It’s easy to see why Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), are prepared to smash the club’s transfer record to bring him in. His performance stats from last season place him among the elite attacking midfielders in Europe.

According to FBref, Wirtz ranks in the top 4% for successful dribbles (2.89 per 90), top 7% for both progressive passes (6.63) and shot-creating actions (5.53), top 9% for assists (0.38), and top 20% for both shots (2.87) and non-penalty goals (0.38).

More importantly, he delivered when it mattered—racking up 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 matches during the 2024/25 campaign. His overall contribution to Leverkusen has also been impressive, with 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 appearances.

With standout statistics and glowing praise from a veteran like Gundogan, Liverpool fans have every reason to be excited about the potential arrival of a world-class talent who could make a significant impact at Anfield
