Rio Ferdinand: Man United Should Pass on Gyokeres and Target a Proven Striker

In light of Manchester United’s struggles in front of goal last season — netting only 44 times in the league, the fifth-worst record — it’s clear that they’re seeking attacking reinforcements.

Matheus Cunha has joined from Wolves, and Bryan Mbeumo is reportedly a target. However, with Thomas Frank now managing Tottenham, that pursuit may hit a snag. Both players are more versatile attackers than traditional strikers.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have not delivered as expected, prompting suggestions that Viktor Gyokeres could be an upgrade. But club legend Rio Ferdinand disagrees, urging United to target a more seasoned striker.

Ferdinand Favors Experience Over Hype

Speaking to Mirror Sport, Ferdinand emphasized that United should prioritize a striker with top-level experience. He noted that while Hojlund arrived with high expectations, he hasn’t settled quickly, and Zirkzee hasn’t been much better.

He stressed the need for a dependable center-forward — someone younger players like Hojlund, Zirkzee, and Chido Obi can learn from. Ferdinand stated he’s not interested in just “any striker,” but rather one who’s proven and reliable.

He singled out Victor Osimhen as his preferred option over Gyokeres, citing the Nigerian’s experience across multiple leagues and international competitions. While acknowledging Gyokeres’s potential, Ferdinand believes Osimhen is better equipped to contribute immediately and mentor the squad’s younger forwards.

Transfer Update

There’s encouraging news for Ferdinand and supporters of this view: Osimhen is reportedly open to a move to Manchester United. Despite rejecting a Saudi offer, the striker remains eager to compete in Europe’s top competitions. Italian sources suggest United are actively pursuing him — a development to watch closely as the transfer window unfolds
