Fresh off their triumphant Premier League title win in the 2024/25 season, Liverpool show no signs of easing up. With Arne Slot at the helm, the Reds are actively pushing to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
In Slot’s debut season, Liverpool stormed to the top of the league with a dominant 10-point lead, losing only four matches—two of which occurred after they had already secured the title. Remarkably, this success came with just one major summer signing.
But this summer tells a different story. Backed by the board with significant financial support, Slot is already shaping a stronger squad. Jeremie Frimpong has officially joined the club, and Milos Kerkez looks to be next. But Liverpool aren’t stopping there.
Liverpool’s Summer Recruitment Intensifies
While the club has been linked with strikers such as Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitiké, and Viktor Gyökeres, there’s yet to be a breakthrough in talks for a new frontman. Still, attention has turned to other key positions—particularly midfield.
Journalist Francois Plateau reports that Liverpool have initiated contact with representatives of Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton. Although Palace value the 21-year-old at £60 million, Liverpool are not willing to meet that figure yet, possibly opening the door for negotiations.
Why Adam Wharton Could Be a Better Signing Than Wirtz
Liverpool fans were recently thrilled by news that the club had agreed to a £116.5 million fee for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz. The German international tallied 22 goals and assists in the Bundesliga and turned down offers from Manchester City and Bayern Munich to join the Reds.
While Wirtz would undoubtedly enhance Liverpool’s attacking firepower, some believe Wharton may prove even more valuable. Unlike Wirtz, who would compete with stars like Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai for minutes, Wharton addresses a long-standing need for a true defensive midfielder—an area left exposed since Fabinho’s departure.
Liverpool had previously pursued Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to no avail. Wharton, described as “world-class” by journalist Luke Weaser-Seychell, might finally be the solution. His stats surpass those of current Liverpool midfielders Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister in crucial areas like progressive passes and key passes per 90 minutes.
In short, Wharton has the ability to link play effectively and elevate the performance of those around him. As Liverpool build toward defending their crown, his addition could prove more transformative than even the high-profile arrival of Wirtz
