Fresh off a dominant 2024/25 Premier League title win, Liverpool are seeking to enhance their attacking line as Arne Slot prepares for his second season in charge.
Mohamed Salah once again led the Reds’ charge with a remarkable 29 goals and 18 assists across 38 league matches. Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo and Luis Díaz also made significant contributions from the left, combining for 23 goals. However, the centre-forward position is still seen as an area needing reinforcement.
With the futures of Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota uncertain, potential departures could free up funds to bring in a top-tier striker.
Šeško Emerges as Key Target
Although Newcastle’s Alexander Isak was seen as the ideal candidate, his £150 million price tag has ruled him out. Similarly, Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres is leaning towards a move to Arsenal, leaving Liverpool to explore other options.
RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško has now emerged as a leading target. According to journalist James Wathland, the Reds have opened talks with the 21-year-old’s representatives. Šeško, who netted 21 goals last season, is reportedly interested in a move to Anfield—a factor that could give Liverpool a competitive edge, especially with Arsenal also in the mix.
Why Šeško May Be Preferred Over Ekitiké
Hugo Ekitiké, who scored 22 goals for Eintracht Frankfurt last season, has also been linked to Liverpool, as well as Manchester United and Chelsea. But his £84 million valuation may prove a stumbling block.
In contrast, Šeško—often compared to Erling Haaland for his physical presence and striking ability—may offer better value. Described by scout Jacek Kulig as “the next Haaland,” Šeško’s height, power, and aerial prowess make him a strong fit for Liverpool’s attacking setup.
Šeško’s 2024/25 Bundesliga Stats (via FotMob):
- Appearances: 33
- Goals: 13
- Goals per 90 minutes: 0.5
- Shots on Target per Game: 1.2
- Dribble Success Rate: 55%
- Aerial Duels Won: 57%
- Duels Won per Match: 5.1
Although Ekitiké scored more goals, Šeško’s efficiency, aerial strength, and potential make him a compelling option for Slot’s evolving system. His playing style complements Liverpool’s current attackers and could offer a more complete and long-term solution at centre-forward.
If Liverpool manage to secure Šeško at a reasonable fee, he could be a key piece in their quest to defend the Premier League crown.
