Chelsea Secure Club World Cup Win, but Colwill Admits Team “Can Improve”
Chelsea began their Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over Los Angeles FC, but the performance didn’t fully satisfy everyone in the squad.
Despite the win, played in front of a relatively quiet 22,000 fans in a large stadium, defender Levi Colwill acknowledged that the team still has room to improve.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Colwill said:
“Getting the win was the priority, and we achieved that. We managed the game well at times—knew when to press and when to keep possession. It wasn’t a perfect game, but in tournament settings, results matter most.”
Chelsea’s goals came in each half. Pedro Neto opened the scoring after a slick assist from Nicolas Jackson, while Liam Delap’s clever pass set up Enzo Fernandez for the second.
However, the Blues’ performance wasn’t without flaws—particularly in the second half, where LAFC threatened repeatedly. Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez had to make several key saves to preserve the scoreline.
Colwill, who helped keep a clean sheet, emphasized the importance of staying solid at the back:
“Clean sheets are crucial for defenders. We know our forwards will find the goals, so we have to ensure we give them that foundation. LAFC had their chances, and we’ll need to tighten up going forward.”
With tougher opponents ahead, Colwill is aware of the challenges the tournament presents:
“Every team is different, so we’ll face various tests. But we’re focused, learning as we go, and ready for what’s next.”
Though not perfect, Chelsea’s opening win gives them a strong start. Manager Enzo Maresca and the squad will look to build on this performance as they push for the title.
