Laporta Reportedly Hesitant Over Nico Williams Signing Due to Friendship With Lamine Yamal

Barcelona continues to pursue Nico Williams as a top transfer target this summer, but club president Joan Laporta reportedly harbors some concerns — not about Williams’ skills or compatibility with coach Hansi Flick’s system, but about his personal relationships off the field.

As reported by journalist Santi Ovalle on Carrusel Deportivo, Laporta is particularly cautious about Nico’s strong bond with young Barcelona star Lamine Yamal. The president fears their close friendship might lead to cliques forming within the team, which previously caused divisions in the locker room during a rocky chapter in the club’s history.

Ovalle referenced the infamous “Club de Amigos” period — a time when tight player circles were seen as contributing to a fractured squad dynamic. Laporta is eager to avoid a repeat and is prioritizing team unity and professionalism.

Still, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona is prepared to activate Nico Williams’ release clause, demonstrating their serious interest in signing him.
