Jarell Quansah has emerged as the latest Liverpool defender linked with a summer move away from Anfield.
The trend continues for Liverpool, with key defenders rumored to be heading for the exit. Trent Alexander-Arnold has already departed, Andy Robertson is reportedly nearing a deal with Atletico Madrid, and Ibrahima Konate’s contract situation remains unresolved with only a year left on his deal.
Now, Jarell Quansah’s name has surfaced in transfer speculation. According to Fabrizio Romano, the 22-year-old is open to a move to Bayer Leverkusen, with discussions reportedly underway between the two clubs regarding a potential transfer to Erik ten Hag’s side.
Liverpool Targeting Guehi as Quansah’s Replacement
Liverpool could replace Quansah with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. Guehi is said to be high on the club’s shortlist, and Liverpool reportedly reached out to his representatives as early as March.
Guehi, 24, is entering the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park. Given this, Palace may be open to selling him for around £40m–£45m, rather than risk losing him for free in 2026.
A Strategic Homegrown Addition
If Liverpool go ahead with selling Quansah and bring in Guehi, they’d solve a growing concern about homegrown player quotas. With the recent sales of Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher, and several young players now aged out of U21 status, the club is nearing its limit in terms of domestic and European squad regulations.
The signing of Jeremie Frimpong helps offset this, as he qualifies through his time in Manchester City’s academy. However, other targets like Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez don’t meet the under-21 exemption criteria.
Would Guehi Be the Right Fit?
Replacing Quansah with Guehi could immediately ease this homegrown concern. Additionally, Guehi’s expiring contract puts Liverpool in a favorable bargaining position. Last summer, Palace rejected a £70m bid from Newcastle, but with only one year remaining on his deal, his price has dropped considerably.
In Marc Guehi, Liverpool would be acquiring a Premier League-proven centre-back with 132 appearances. He’s entering his prime years and recently captained Crystal Palace to FA Cup success, proving his leadership on the pitch.
