Arsenal in Advanced Talks to Sign £84m Striker Viktor Gyökeres Ahead of Liverpool

Arsenal is reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres, beating out interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester United. The Swedish international, who has a release clause of £84 million, scored 50 goals across all competitions last season and is considered one of Europe’s most in-demand forwards.

The Gunners are believed to have offered Gyökeres a five-year contract worth around £135,000 per week, with the total package estimated at about £9 million per year. Arsenal’s new sporting director, Andrea Berta, is said to be playing a crucial role in securing this high-profile signing, showing strong support for manager Mikel Arteta.

Arteta’s position at the club remains a topic of discussion following another trophyless season. Despite finishing with an impressive 89 points in the league, Arsenal fell short once again, largely due to Manchester City’s continued dominance. The last major trophy the club won was the FA Cup in 2020 under Arteta.

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville commented on the club’s patience with Arteta, calling it rare and commendable in modern football. He highlighted the club’s progress under Arteta’s leadership, especially their run to the Champions League semi-finals, and suggested that the manager still enjoys strong backing from both the board and fans.

Gyökeres appears keen on a return to England, and Arsenal is currently leading the race to sign him. However, the club’s lack of silverware could put pressure on both Arteta and the transfer strategy if results don’t soon turn into trophies.
