Napoli have identified Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez as their main target to lead the front line this summer, according to CaughtOffside.
The Serie A club is prioritizing the signing of the Uruguayan forward and is prepared to offer around €42 million. However, Liverpool have set a price tag of €50 million for the 25-year-old, who is reportedly eager to leave Anfield while remaining in European football.
Though Nunez attracted interest from Saudi Arabian clubs in January, he wasn’t seriously considering a move there at the time.
Saudi clubs may try again this summer, but there’s currently little sign that Nunez is open to leaving Europe. Meanwhile, Napoli are working hard to finalize the transfer quickly.
Could Nunez be on his way to Napoli?
A transfer to Napoli now appears to be the most probable outcome. Sources close to the deal say the Italian side is very enthusiastic about what Nunez could contribute to Antonio Conte’s squad.
Insiders describe him as having the “international profile” that could significantly boost Napoli’s quality.
While the former Benfica star hasn’t quite lived up to expectations in the Premier League, there’s hope he could flourish in Serie A.
Napoli may be the right fit
Working under Conte could be just what Nunez needs. The coach has a strong track record of reviving players who’ve struggled in England—Romelu Lukaku found success under him at both Inter Milan and Napoli, and Scott McTominay has also excelled since his switch from Manchester United to Naples last summer.
Nunez has managed 40 goals in 143 appearances for Liverpool, a modest return, but a fresh start in Italy could help him rediscover his form.
