Chelsea Fans React to Liam Delap’s First Start in Club World Cup

Chelsea supporters were quick to take to social media to share their thoughts on Liam Delap after the striker made his first starting appearance for the club in their FIFA Club World Cup loss to Flamengo. Delap had previously impressed with an assist in a cameo appearance against LAFC earlier in the tournament.

His strong showing earlier in the week earned him a spot in the starting lineup from manager Enzo Maresca. The match against Flamengo proved to be more intense than Chelsea’s opener, and fans were eager to comment on Delap’s performance.

Despite his effort, Delap’s stats were underwhelming. He only managed one shot on target and had another blocked—both considered big chances missed. Over the course of the game, he had just 15 touches, completed 6 out of 9 passes, and lost possession five times. His duel success and dribbling also fell short, with just one successful dribble and only one duel won out of five. He was substituted in the 64th minute for Nicolas Jackson, who was sent off four minutes later.

Key Stat: Delap hasn’t scored in his last nine senior matches.

Still, fans seemed encouraged by Delap’s attitude and presence on the pitch. On social media, some praised his intensity and commitment, suggesting he fits Chelsea’s identity well.

One fan wrote, “Loved this game so far. Fiery. Delap just feels right for Chelsea. Funny how people say players don’t care about this tournament after watching this.” Another added, “If you can’t see the potential in Delap, I don’t know what to tell you.” Others praised his strength, hold-up play, and style, calling him a perfect fit for the team.
