Alexis Mac Allister might not be pleased if Florian Wirtz’s record-breaking move to Liverpool sparks a dispute over the No.10 shirt.
The Argentine midfielder played a crucial role in Arne Slot’s first season in charge, featuring in 35 of Liverpool’s 38 league matches as they narrowly beat Arsenal to win the Premier League title.
At just 26, Mac Allister has shown leadership on the field, often stepping up when captain Virgil van Dijk is unavailable.
However, Liverpool’s £116 million signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen introduces a new dynamic. The German international had a stellar season with the Bundesliga champions, scoring 16 goals and assisting 14 more in 45 appearances, and he wore the iconic No.10 shirt at his former club.
While Wirtz has downplayed concerns about squad numbers, talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino believes it could still become a point of tension.
Speaking on June 21, Cascarino said: “Will he want the No.10 shirt? Mac Allister currently has it, and that number holds special meaning for Argentine players. I doubt he’ll want to give it up easily — it could cause some frustration. Personally, I was never particular about shirt numbers, even when I wore No.9 at Villa, but some players are very attached to specific numbers.”
