Manchester United have reportedly reached out to Aston Villa to assess the possibility of signing goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
The club is eager to bolster its goalkeeping department this summer, though it’s unclear if their aim is to find a replacement for the underperforming Andre Onana or simply to bring in a dependable backup to challenge Altay Bayindir, who has yet to fully convince the coaching staff.
Martinez has been the subject of transfer rumors recently, especially after an emotional farewell-like gesture to fans during Villa’s final home game. Although this fueled speculation, his wife later denied he was planning an exit.
Several sources now claim that the Argentine World Cup winner is open to joining United—a prospect that has reportedly encouraged Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS to consider pursuing a deal.
According to Diario Olé via UtdXclusive, United have officially contacted Aston Villa to discuss a possible transfer. However, Martinez signed a contract extension earlier this season, tying him to Villa until 2029. This gives the Midlands club strong leverage and they are likely to demand a significant fee for the 32-year-old keeper.
Despite praise from figures like Lionel Messi, who once called Martinez the best goalkeeper in the world, Manchester United might be reluctant to invest heavily in a player of his age. The club’s intent to replace Onana remains uncertain, especially since they’re not urgently looking to offload him. Strengthening the goalkeeper position is not currently a top priority in this transfer window.
