Despite reports from Portugal suggesting otherwise, Liverpool are not pursuing a move for Viktor Gyokeres. The Sporting Lisbon striker is expected to depart this summer, with multiple Premier League clubs showing interest.
Manchester United and Arsenal are currently leading the chase for the former Coventry City forward. While Liverpool have also been linked with him amid their busy transfer window following their title-winning season, sources indicate that Gyokeres isn’t part of their recruitment plans.
The Reds have already broken the British transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz, but according to TNT Sports, they won’t be targeting Gyokeres, even though they are looking to strengthen their attack.
Liverpool have been connected with other forwards, including Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike. New manager Arne Slot has already secured deals for Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, with Milos Kerkez rumored to be the next arrival.
Gyokeres has had an outstanding run in Portugal, scoring nearly 100 goals over two seasons, including over 50 goals last season alone. While he would be a valuable addition to any top club, Liverpool appear uninterested.
Manchester United’s pursuit of Gyokeres has intensified, partly due to their new manager Ruben Amorim, who previously coached Gyokeres at Sporting. However, United’s inability to offer Champions League football could hinder their chances.
Arsenal, on the other hand, have prioritized RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko over Gyokeres. Nevertheless, if Sesko’s wage demands prove too high, Arsenal may reconsider and move for Gyokeres instead.
Sporting were reportedly open to selling Gyokeres for around £65 million—below his release clause—but disagreements have arisen. The striker is frustrated with the club’s demands exceeding what was previously discussed.
Sporting president Frederico Varandas has denied there was ever a verbal agreement regarding Gyokeres’s departure, stating: “I can guarantee Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60 million plus €10 million because I never promised that. Up to now, Sporting has not received any offers for Gyokeres—not now and not last season.”
