Liverpool have received a major update in their pursuit of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.
Isak has been outstanding at St James’ Park and is now regarded as one of the most in-demand strikers in world football.
The Swedish forward scored 23 goals in the Premier League last season, helping Newcastle qualify for the Champions League and win the League Cup.
Despite Liverpool’s interest, Newcastle are firm in their stance that Isak is not for sale.
The Reds have already splashed over £100 million on Bayer Leverkusen stars Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, and also secured Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez. Manager Arne Slot remains keen on adding a striker, especially with uncertainty surrounding Darwin Nunez’s future at Anfield.
However, signing Isak seems highly unlikely. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, it would take an offer of around £150 million just to open talks.
Ornstein explained on The Athletic’s podcast that Newcastle are under no pressure to sell, with Isak still having more than three years left on his current contract. The club are also prepared to offer him a new, improved deal.
“Newcastle are in a strong position. Isak is already well paid and the club won’t hesitate to increase his wages further. He’s central to the club’s long-term, Saudi-backed ambitions,” Ornstein said.
“From Isak’s perspective, he’s settled. The team is in the Champions League, they’ve ended their trophy drought, and he seems genuinely happy at Newcastle.”
Manager Eddie Howe is determined to keep Isak, who has been pivotal to Newcastle’s recent success.
Newcastle are unwilling to listen to any offers, and even with three years left on his contract, they’re ready to extend it further.
Isak, now 25, has scored 54 goals and made 9 assists in 86 appearances for the club. His versatility as a striker — combining finishing inside the box, long-range shooting, aerial presence, and pace — makes him invaluable.
Following his 23-goal season, Isak could well push toward 30 goals next season.
If Liverpool somehow managed to sign him, alongside Wirtz and the ever-reliable Mohamed Salah (who scored 29 Premier League goals last season), they would boast one of Europe’s most dangerous frontlines.
While Isak will play Champions League football at Newcastle next season, Liverpool could offer him a realistic chance of winning it.
However, Newcastle are determined to hold firm, and Isak is expected to remain on Tyneside for the foreseeable future
