Liverpool’s pursuit of Swedish striker Alexander Isak has entered a pivotal phase, with financial experts confirming that the Merseyside club is in a strong position to break their transfer record—even if Newcastle United hold firm on their £150 million asking price.
Following their Premier League title win, new manager Arne Slot is spearheading a bold squad overhaul. The Reds have already spent heavily this summer, bringing in Florian Wirtz for a British-record £116 million, along with Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m) and Milos Kerkez (£40m).
Despite their spending spree exceeding £180 million, Liverpool remain ambitious—and are now turning their attention to signing a world-class striker. With Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota potentially departing, a marquee No.9 has become a priority.
Thanks to solid commercial income and strategic player sales, Liverpool’s financial position remains healthy. This gives the club the flexibility to make a blockbuster move for Isak—possibly the defining transfer of the summer.
Among the forwards under consideration, Isak has emerged as Liverpool’s top target. Since his £63 million switch from Real Sociedad in 2022, the Swedish international has been prolific in the Premier League, netting 54 goals in 86 matches and establishing himself as one of the league’s most clinical finishers.
Newcastle, however, are reluctant to sell their talisman. Still, football finance specialist Dan Plumley told *Football Insider* that Liverpool can realistically afford the move. “Financially, Liverpool are more than capable of signing Isak,” Plumley said. “They’ve invested heavily already, but potential sales—such as Jarell Quansah or even an early exit for Trent Alexander-Arnold—could unlock additional funds.”
Plumley also pointed out that Liverpool’s minimal net spend last summer—around £0.1 million—means they have more flexibility when viewed over a two-year financial period. “Taking a longer-term view, it’s a move that fits within their budget,” he added.
The biggest challenge, however, remains Newcastle’s willingness to engage in talks. “The question isn’t whether Liverpool can afford Isak—it’s whether Newcastle will entertain any offers,” Plumley noted. “Negotiations would be complex, and Newcastle will undoubtedly demand a premium. The real test is whether Liverpool are prepared to pay it.”
With both Núñez and Jota facing uncertain futures, Slot will need a proven goal-scorer to lead his new-look attack. At 25, Isak not only offers long-term potential but also fits the dynamic, pressing style that Slot is expected to bring to Anfield.
While the situation remains fluid, Liverpool’s finances are reportedly in place. What happens next will depend on Newcastle’s resolve—and whether Isak is ready for a new chapter in his career.
