Rúben Amorim is stepping into the most pivotal phase of his managerial journey as he gears up for his first full season (2025/26) in charge of Manchester United.
The Portuguese coach took over in November last year but struggled to halt the team’s decline, with United ending the season in the bottom half of the Premier League table. His limited influence was largely due to an underperforming squad he inherited and minimal support in the transfer market—only Patrick Dorgu was added to the senior team during the January window.
Now, Amorim finally has the chance to rebuild the team in line with his vision. With the summer transfer window wide open, United—supported by INEOS and new sporting director Dan Ashworth—have started targeting players who fit the manager’s tactical blueprint.
This summer could prove transformative for both Amorim and the club in their quest to return to elite-level competition.
One of United’s key targets has been Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. The Cameroonian international, who scored 20 goals in 38 league games last season, has shown interest in joining United despite rival offers from Newcastle and Tottenham.
Although United’s first offer of £55 million was rejected, they’ve returned with an improved £60 million bid, which Brentford are now seriously considering. If all goes well, Mbeumo could undergo a medical next week and follow Matheus Cunha—signed from Wolves for £42.5 million—as United’s second summer addition.
Amorim believes Mbeumo will significantly boost the team’s attacking output, particularly on the right flank, offering both creativity and goals.
Meanwhile, a potentially even more important signing looms in defence: Ronald Araújo of Barcelona. Reports suggest United have tabled a £38 million bid for the Uruguayan centre-back. Barcelona, in need of funds for their own transfer plans, may be willing to accept.
Although Bayern Munich and Juventus have also shown interest, United are currently leading the race for his signature.
With Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelöf leaving the club, the centre-back position has become a critical area for reinforcement. Araújo’s strong defensive capabilities and excellent ball-playing skills suit Amorim’s style, which emphasizes building from the back.
The Uruguayan boasts a 92% pass accuracy and averages 3.1 progressive passes into the final third per game—traits that would bring calm, structure, and high football IQ to United’s defence. His leadership and adaptability would be instrumental in solidifying a revamped backline.
While Mbeumo would bring attacking flair, Araújo could play a more foundational role in shaping the team’s long-term balance and tactical approach. Amorim’s strategy hinges on a dependable defence, and Araújo’s addition would directly address one of United’s biggest weaknesses.
With full support now behind him in the transfer market, Amorim may finally be able to usher in a new era at Old Trafford.
