Rúben Amorim is entering the most pivotal phase of his managerial career as he prepares Manchester United for the 2025/26 season.
After stepping in last November, Amorim struggled to halt United’s decline, with the team finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table. His efforts were hampered by the squad he inherited and the lack of major signings—Patrick Dorgu being the sole first-team addition during the January window.
Now, with the summer transfer window fully open, Amorim finally has the opportunity to rebuild the squad according to his vision. Backed by INEOS and sporting director Dan Ashworth, the club’s management is targeting players who fit Amorim’s tactical approach.

A key target is Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo, who scored 20 goals in 38 league games last season. Despite competition from Tottenham and Newcastle, Mbeumo is keen on a move to Old Trafford. United initially had a £55 million bid turned down but have returned with an improved £60 million offer, which Brentford are seriously considering. If all goes well, Mbeumo could undergo his medical next week, becoming United’s second signing of the summer following Matheus Cunha’s £42.5 million move from Wolves.

However, an even more critical target may be Barcelona’s Ronald Araújo. United have tabled a bid of around £38 million for the Uruguayan centre-back. While Bayern Munich and Juventus are also interested, United appear to be frontrunners. Barcelona are considering the offer as they look to generate funds for other transfers.
With Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelöf both departing, reinforcing the defense has become a pressing need. Araújo, known for his strong defensive skills and ability to play out from the back, fits perfectly into Amorim’s system, which emphasizes building from defense.
Araújo’s stats back up his reputation, boasting a 92% pass accuracy and averaging 3.1 progressive passes into the final third per game. His composure, tactical awareness, and leadership could be vital in reshaping United’s backline.
While Mbeumo offers flair and attacking firepower, Araújo’s signing is arguably more crucial for balancing the squad and supporting Amorim’s tactical plans.
