Mounting Tensions: Athletic Club Challenges Barcelona Over Nico Williams Pursuit

The battle for Nico Williams is intensifying.

According to Cadena SER, Athletic Club President Jon Uriarte and CEO Jon Berasategi have officially raised concerns with both La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) regarding Barcelona’s compliance with financial regulations amid their interest in signing the winger.

Athletic argues that Barcelona is currently violating La Liga’s 1:1 spending rule, which would, in their view, prevent the Catalan club from activating Williams’ €58 million release clause.

In a firm stance to retain their rising star, Athletic is prepared to initiate legal and financial action if necessary, vowing to use every regulatory avenue to oppose the transfer.

This sets the stage for a significant off-field clash between the two clubs, with La Liga now facing pressure to step in.

With the transfer window closing in, attention turns to how Barcelona will respond.
