Boosting their goal-scoring power is Arsenal’s top priority this summer, as sporting director Andrea Berta leads the charge. Current forwards Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus have struggled to consistently deliver, prompting the club to prepare for significant investment.
Recent transfer speculation has seen Arsenal shift focus between Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres. While Sesko would cost around £70 million, his transfer might be easier to finalize than Gyokeres, who is also being pursued by Manchester United.
Arsenal Eyeing Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins
Initially, Gyokeres was expected to leave Sporting for £59 million based on an informal agreement. However, Sporting’s director dismissed that claim, suggesting a fee closer to £68 million. Despite his impressive goal record, concerns remain since he hasn’t played in Europe’s top five leagues.
As an alternative, Arsenal are considering Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, who could be available for less than £40 million—significantly cheaper than other targets. The Gunners previously made a £60 million bid for Watkins in January, which Villa rejected.
According to Portuguese outlet Record, Arsenal remain interested in Watkins. They have reportedly contacted his representatives, with suggestions that Villa might now be willing to negotiate for a lower fee.
Watkins, who scored 17 goals last season, was set to play for England this summer but had to withdraw due to a minor injury. His role at Villa has diminished slightly under manager Unai Emery.
Watkins Unhappy with Limited Role at Villa
With Marcus Rashford returning to Manchester United, Watkins has a better shot at reclaiming a starting role at Villa. However, the opportunity to lead the line at Arsenal could be a major incentive for him to consider a move. His current contract runs until 2028, giving Villa leverage in negotiations.
Speaking on his recent frustrations, Watkins shared: “I only got 20 minutes in both legs against PSG. Honestly, I was furious about not starting—I made that clear to the manager. While I respect his decisions, I’m not someone who’s happy sitting on the bench. It was tough missing out on such a big stage when I had helped the team get there.”
