New Twist in Arsenal’s Pursuit of Viktor Gyökeres as Transfer Clause Activated
Arsenal’s interest in Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres has taken a new turn, with a specific clause in his contract now reportedly in effect.
The Gunners have been tracking Gyökeres throughout the summer as they aim to strengthen their attack before the transfer window closes on September 1. Although they are eager to secure a deal before pre-season begins, they are not rushing into any decisions.
Earlier reports suggested Sporting and Gyökeres had agreed he could leave for a reduced price this summer. However, Sporting are holding firm on their €80 million (£68.7m) valuation, creating tension between the club and the player.
Now, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola via SportWitness, a clause in Gyökeres’ contract became active on July 1. It states that if Sporting reject an offer of €60 million (£51.6m) or more, they must pay 10% of that value (around €6m or £6.2m) to the striker’s agent as compensation.
This could work in Arsenal’s favour, as they are reportedly ready to meet the £51.6m figure. But if Sporting refuse, not only would they owe money to the agent, they might also risk the price returning to Gyökeres’ full €100 million (£86m) release clause.
Gyökeres has yet to rejoin Sporting for pre-season training, as he was given extra time off due to international duty. He is expected to return next Monday.
