Sources close to the situation suggest that both clubs have discussed possible player swaps, though key names like Jarell Quansah were excluded from earlier proposals — notably a failed Anthony Gordon–Joe Gomez swap deal last year.That deal was close to completion in June 2024, but Newcastle ultimately withdrew, opting to hold onto Gordon after raising enough funds through last-minute sales, including Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest (£35 million) and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton (£33 million). Gordon, a Liverpool-born winger and boyhood fan of the club, later signed a new deal with Newcastle in October.Despite that, Liverpool’s interest in Gordon has resurfaced this summer.
talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook noted that Gordon was extremely close to joining Liverpool previously, and the club may still be keen to revisit the move.
However, any deal would likely require Liverpool to clear space in the squad and raise funds through player sales.So far, Liverpool have sold Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, and Jarell Quansah, and now Harvey Elliott is also being made available, with RB Leipzig monitoring his situation.
Liverpool have reportedly set a price tag exceeding £40 million for Elliott — a similar valuation to what they demanded for Joe Gomez last summer.
While Liverpool’s pursuit of Gordon and Isak would likely require a significant financial commitment, Newcastle have yet to secure any major signings and recently missed out on Joao Pedro, who joined Chelsea instead.
As it stands, both clubs remain active in the market, and with long-standing interest on both sides, further developments may unfold in the coming weeks — especially if Liverpool decide to make a serious move for either Gordon or Isak.
