A surprising development has emerged regarding Alexander Isak’s future, and it could dramatically alter Liverpool’s transfer strategy this summer.
Since the transfer window opened in early June, Liverpool have been actively searching for a new striker. Multiple players have been linked with a move to Anfield, including Hugo Ekitike, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak — who is reportedly Arne Slot’s top target.
Despite Liverpool’s interest, Newcastle have consistently maintained that Isak is not for sale, considering him crucial to their long-term project.
However, fresh updates from two respected transfer insiders suggest the situation may not be as final as it seemed. Liverpool’s pursuit of Isak could still be alive — and may yet redefine their transfer window.
Fabrizio Romano reported on X that Liverpool are now preparing to approach Newcastle directly with a formal offer — potentially a club-record bid — for the Swedish striker.
While the final decision remains with Newcastle, if they refuse to sell Isak, Liverpool are expected to pivot and attempt to hijack the Magpies’ ongoing negotiations for Ekitike.
David Ornstein added that, although no formal bid has been submitted yet, Liverpool are aware of Newcastle’s stance but believe a deal worth around £120 million could sway them.
Interestingly, this comes shortly after Eintracht Frankfurt reportedly rejected Newcastle’s £70 million bid for Ekitike.
If Liverpool proceed with an official move for Isak, it could cast uncertainty over Darwin Núñez’s future at the club. The Uruguayan striker has recently been linked with a move to Napoli and clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

Popular YouTuber and Manchester United fan Mark Goldbridge weighed in, suggesting Liverpool’s pursuit of Isak is a strategic power move.
He believes the Reds are making a bold play — either land Isak or disrupt Newcastle by swooping in for Ekitike instead.
“Liverpool are basically telling Newcastle: take our record bid for Isak, or we’ll snatch Ekitike from under your nose,” Goldbridge posted on X.
