Exclusive: Liverpool Ready to Table Offer for ‘Outstanding’ Striker After Agent Meeting
While much of the spotlight remains on Liverpool’s pursuit of Alexander Isak, the club is also exploring alternative attacking options—most notably another proven Premier League forward—as a contingency plan.
According to a report from The Athletic via trusted journalist David Ornstein, Liverpool have made initial contact with Newcastle United regarding Isak, though no formal bid has been submitted yet for the striker, who is valued at around £120 million.
In parallel, new information from French sources has revealed that Liverpool have opened talks over a potential deal for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. And now, fresh details are emerging.
Liverpool Preparing to Bid for Mateta
As reported by Empire of the Kop, Liverpool held face-to-face discussions in Paris with Mateta and his representatives. The Merseyside club is believed to be preparing a bid worth between €50 million and €60 million (£43m–£52m) for the 28-year-old.
However, Liverpool are not alone in the race. AC Milan and Manchester United are also showing interest, with the player reportedly open to a move to Serie A—potentially giving Milan the edge.
Crystal Palace have been attempting to tie Mateta down to a contract extension since December, but with only two years left on his current deal and no agreement in sight, a summer departure is becoming more likely.
A Worthy Plan B to Isak?
Isak remains Liverpool’s top priority in attack, but if negotiations stall, Mateta could emerge as a serious alternative.
Jamie Carragher has previously described Mateta’s finishing ability as “outstanding,” suggesting he has what it takes to perform at Champions League level. His record—30 Premier League goals across the past two campaigns—speaks to his consistency and sharpness in front of goal.
