Manchester United Target Sporting Star Viktor Gyökeres in Summer Transfer Push
Rúben Amorim, the head coach of Manchester United, has made it clear who he wants to lead the club’s attack next season—Viktor Gyökeres.
Facing a disappointing season and languishing in 14th place with just 33 points from 27 games, United are desperate to bolster their frontline. Amorim is pushing for a major summer signing, and Gyökeres—one of Europe’s most in-form strikers—is now top of his list.
According to renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the Swedish striker, currently shining at Sporting CP, is firmly on United’s radar. Though Gyökeres has an £84 million release clause, a gentleman’s agreement with the Portuguese club could allow him to leave for a significantly lower fee—reportedly between £55 million and £63 million.
Amorim’s admiration for Gyökeres is no secret, and their strong working relationship could help seal the deal. Gyökeres, for his part, is said to deeply respect his current manager—potentially giving United the edge in what may become a competitive bidding war.
Still, the transfer is not guaranteed. United’s ability to finance the move hinges on two major factors: their summer budget and whether they secure a spot in European competition next season. Without Champions League or Europa League income, United would likely need to sell players to fund such a marquee signing.
Since joining Sporting from Coventry City in 2023, Gyökeres has been sensational. He bagged 43 goals and 15 assists in his first season and has already added 37 goals and 9 assists in 39 games this campaign—form that has made him one of the most feared forwards on the continent.
