In a passionate and scathing public critique, former Barcelona presidential candidate Víctor Font has taken aim at the club’s current leadership over the growing chaos surrounding the Camp Nou redevelopment project. “We cannot continue to parade ourselves as the greatest club in football history while allowing ourselves to fall into such an embarrassing state of disarray,” Font began, directly addressing what he perceives as an institutional failure rooted in broken promises and wishful thinking.
Font acknowledged that the scale and ambition of the Espai Barça project—which includes a complete renovation of the iconic Camp Nou—was always going to be a monumental challenge. “Anyone with even a basic understanding of large-scale infrastructure projects would have flagged that timeline as impossible. Yet, the board chose to sell this fantasy to the public anyway. Was this merely naïveté, or was it a calculated move to maintain appearances and buy time?”
Font accused the club of substituting proper planning with empty optimism, a trend he believes has defined recent years. “There’s a dangerous pattern here,” he warned. “Hope has replaced realism. Strategic thinking has given way to improvisation. And the consequence is what we see now—a stadium nowhere near completion, with fans left in the dark.”
“The line between incompetence and dishonesty is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish,” he added, alluding to what he views as a deepening crisis of leadership.
