Florian Wirtz’s Father Reveals How Arne Slot Convinced Son to Pick Liverpool Over Bayern

Florian Wirtz’s £116 million move to Liverpool, which made him the most expensive signing in Premier League history, was strongly influenced by one man — Arne Slot.

Despite Bayern Munich’s persistent efforts to land the German star, Wirtz chose Anfield, and his father, Hans-Joachim Wirtz, has shed light on why.

Speaking to Der Spiegel via BILD, Hans-Joachim revealed that Slot’s influence was crucial in Florian’s decision.

“Arne Slot really impressed Florian with his football vision and personality,” he said. “Florian thrives under coaches who offer him freedom and show understanding. Slot showed exactly that, presenting his style of play, tactical ideas, and how Florian would fit in perfectly at Liverpool. That left a strong impression.”

The pace and intensity of English football also appealed to the young playmaker, and the top-notch training facilities at Liverpool added to the allure.

Slot’s convincing pitch ultimately sealed the deal, and Wirtz left Bayer Leverkusen for Merseyside, turning down Bayern’s advances.

His father also spoke on how tough it was to reject Bayern, especially given the strong relationship with Uli Hoeness, who had personally tried to secure the transfer.

“Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge were incredible in their approach. Uli helped us a lot after Florian’s knee injury in 2022, getting him surgery appointments quickly. That’s why telling him no was emotionally difficult,” he said. “He was professional and fair as always, but understandably disappointed.”

With Liverpool winning the Premier League under Slot last season, Wirtz now joins a title-winning side aiming to defend their crown. The highly-rated midfielder could make his debut during the Reds’ preseason tour in Asia, possibly against AC Milan.
