Barcelona legend Ivan Rakitić has thrown his full support behind Marc-André ter Stegen, declaring him the undisputed No. 1 goalkeeper at the club, despite the heavy speculation surrounding the position this summer. While Barcelona’s board considers bringing in Juan Garcia, a promising young talent from the academy, Rakitić left no doubt in a recent interview with COPE:
“There’s no comparison. If Marc is fit, there’s no debate—Ter Stegen must start.”
This comes as Ter Stegen battles a health issue that may require surgery, casting doubt over his availability at the start of the season. Nonetheless, the German goalkeeper has made it clear he has no intention of leaving and is committed to fighting for his spot.
Rakitić’s statement is significant. With the dressing room still carrying deep respect for Ter Stegen’s leadership, and Barcelona’s fanbase closely aligned with their former midfielder’s views, the club’s board may now be more hesitant to accelerate any change.
Rakitić also praised Lamine Yamal, advising coach Hansi Flick to nurture the youngster carefully:
“Flick is perfect for this job. He’ll know when to push Yamal and when to let him grow at his own pace.”
With the club at a crossroads, Rakitić’s influential backing of Ter Stegen could reshape Barça’s summer goalkeeper plans—but the coming weeks will reveal if the board heeds his advice or pursues a new No.1.
