Liverpool Legend Backs Move for Isak – Warns Against Selling Núñez
Liverpool icon John Aldridge has publicly supported Arne Slot’s interest in signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, calling the Swedish striker a perfect fit for Slot’s dynamic system. However, he strongly cautioned against offloading Darwin Núñez, arguing the Uruguayan still has great potential under the new manager.
As the Reds gear up for another title challenge after finishing second in the 2024/25 season, Aldridge emphasized that Isak’s clinical ability and intelligent movement make him ideal for Slot’s 4-3-3 style. The 25-year-old bagged 25 Premier League goals last season, with standout performances against Tottenham and Manchester City.
Aldridge noted Isak’s impressive 19.6% conversion rate and suitability for a high-pressing system. “He’s the kind of striker who would immediately strengthen our attack,” he said. Liverpool have reportedly started negotiations with Newcastle, who are holding out for £90 million, potentially involving players like Joe Gomez or Trent Alexander-Arnold in the deal.
Despite the excitement around Isak, Aldridge warned that Liverpool must not part ways with Núñez. Although Núñez struggled with consistency—scoring only seven league goals last season—Aldridge believes his high energy, physicality, and raw talent make him a strong asset for Slot’s pressing system. “Darwin’s rough around the edges, but with the right guidance, he can become a 20-goal-a-season striker,” he explained.
Interest in Núñez has come from Napoli and Saudi side Al-Hilal, with the latter offering a hefty £65 million and £400,000-per-week wages. But Aldridge insists Núñez’s issues are more about confidence than quality, pointing to moments like his brace against Brentford and his tribute to the late Diogo Jota as signs of his passion and potential.
Liverpool’s attacking options are in flux. With Luis Díaz attracting attention from Barcelona and PSG, and the addition of Federico Chiesa for £12 million, Aldridge sees Isak as a major boost—not a replacement. A front three of Salah, Isak, and Díaz, with Núñez and Chiesa as depth, would give Liverpool the firepower to compete at the highest level.
However, financial limitations could complicate any deal. Newcastle are reluctant to sell, and Liverpool have spent cautiously since 2023. Nevertheless, Aldridge remains optimistic, placing trust in Slot’s vision, which already delivered 82 points and Champions League qualification in his debut campaign.
