Former Barcelona star Ivan Rakitic has weighed in on the club’s ongoing goalkeeper debate, firmly backing Marc-André ter Stegen to stay as the first-choice shot-stopper. His statement comes amidst speculation that Barcelona could replace Ter Stegen with rising talent Juan Garcia, especially as the German goalkeeper faces a possible surgery.
In an interview with Spanish radio COPE, Rakitic dismissed any comparisons, declaring, “There’s no debate—Ter Stegen must play. He’s the leader and has earned respect at the club.” He emphasized that if Ter Stegen is healthy, there should be no hesitation in starting him, despite the club’s efforts to integrate new talent.
Rakitic acknowledged Juan Garcia’s promise but warned that Barcelona’s expectations are on another level, insisting that no current European goalkeeper matches Ter Stegen’s quality when fit.
He also praised young star Lamine Yamal, advising manager Hansi Flick to carefully balance nurturing the teenager’s growth while giving him space to develop under the spotlight.
