Alan Shearer Slams Manchester United’s Transfer Strategy Despite £130M Spree
Manchester United’s ambitious transfer window has drawn sharp criticism from Premier League icon Alan Shearer, who believes the club is still miles away from genuine competitiveness—despite spending over £130 million this summer.
Speaking during a recent analysis segment, Shearer questioned the Red Devils’ decision-making, pointing to the signings of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford as examples of moves that don’t solve the squad’s biggest problems.
“You can splash the cash, but if you’re not investing in the right areas, you’re just going in circles,” Shearer said. “United are still at least four players short of seriously challenging for a top-six finish.”
The club’s acquisitions — Cunha reportedly costing £55 million and Mbeumo around £40 million — offer attacking options and flair, but Shearer raised concerns about gaps in central midfield and defense. His comments echo a growing frustration among fans and pundits alike about United’s recruitment approach and overall direction.
Preseason performances haven’t helped either, with the team displaying a lack of tactical cohesion and chemistry. “There’s no real identity in this squad,” Shearer added. “Flashes of brilliance won’t get you back to the top.”
So far, Manchester United have not officially responded to Shearer’s remarks. However, reports suggest internal pressure is mounting on the club’s recruitment department to make further signings before the transfer window closes.
