Ruben Amorim Points Out Key Area Bruno Fernandes Must Improve Ahead of 2025/26 Season

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has underlined an important aspect of Bruno Fernandes’ game that needs adjustment if the club hopes to recover from a disappointing 2024/25 campaign.

Although Fernandes delivered excellent individual numbers last season, Amorim emphasized that the Portuguese midfielder needs to manage his emotions better—by showing more composure and faith in his teammates during challenging moments.

United endured a dismal season, finishing 15th in the Premier League with just 42 points and narrowly losing the Europa League final 1-0 to Spurs. Despite the poor team performance, Fernandes was a standout, tallying 19 goals and 19 assists in 57 games across all competitions.

However, his tendency to try and do everything himself came under criticism. At times, Fernandes strayed from his position and forced plays, which disrupted the team’s structure.

After a recent 2-1 pre-season victory over West Ham—where Fernandes scored both goals—Amorim told MUTV that the captain must grow in his leadership role by letting others contribute more.

“Bruno’s numbers speak for themselves—his goals, assists, and relentless work rate,” Amorim said. “He’s a crucial leader on and off the pitch. But sometimes, when things go wrong, his frustration gets the better of him. He tries to do too much, when sometimes the best move is to trust his teammates and stick to his role.”

Amorim added that with stronger squad depth this season, Fernandes will not have to carry the creative load alone. The coach is urging his captain to lead more wisely and calmly.

Manchester United’s next game in the EPL Summer Series in the U.S. is set for Wednesday, July 30, against Bournemouth.
