Manchester United supporters have singled out one player for heavy criticism following the club’s final pre-season friendly — a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina — just a week before their Premier League opener against Arsenal.
The match at Old Trafford was filled with anticipation as fans welcomed new signings Matheus Cunha, Diego Leon, Bryan Mbuemo, and the recently unveiled Benjamin Sesko. Club legend David de Gea also made an emotional return in his first appearance since leaving on a free transfer in 2023.
Fiorentina struck first when Simon Sohm capitalised on poor United set-piece defending, but the hosts equalised after Robin Gosens turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Casemiro. Despite his role in the goal, the Brazilian midfielder’s overall performance drew widespread frustration from fans.
The 33-year-old, whose future at United has been uncertain for months, lost possession seven times and struggled with the pace of the game — the same issue that plagued him last season. Critics on social media were quick to voice their concerns. Prominent United figure Mark Goldbridge posted: “Casemiro does everything in slow motion.” Others were harsher, with one writing: “Casemiro is finished. So slow. We desperately need a midfielder.”
Another fan stated: “If you think we can go into the season without a proper athletic CDM, you’re either overly optimistic or naive.” One particularly blunt comment read: “Casemiro is ruining the press and gives the ball away most of the time. I don’t want him anywhere near the team against Arsenal!”
Some supporters believe manager Ruben Amorim deliberately started Casemiro to highlight the need for reinforcements in midfield. Speculation has grown around Carlos Baleba being a top target, but Brighton are reportedly demanding over £100 million for the 21-year-old.
With United’s attacking signings seemingly complete after Sesko’s arrival, all eyes are now on whether the club will make a final big move to strengthen the heart of their midfield.
