Liverpool’s ambitious summer recruitment drive has hit another twist, as manager Arne Slot appears to have ended the club’s pursuit of Lyon winger Malick Fofana following a major decision on Federico Chiesa.
Chiesa Stays, Plans Change
Chiesa, who endured a frustrating 2024/25 campaign with just one league start, had been tipped to leave Anfield this summer. But after scoring against Bournemouth last week and reassessing his role under Slot, the 27-year-old has decided to stay and fight for his place.
Journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that Slot is now “seriously considering” keeping Chiesa in his long-term plans. This shift has cooled Liverpool’s interest in Fofana, despite the 21-year-old Belgian winger’s desire to follow in the footsteps of Salah, Sadio Mané, and El Hadji Diouf at Anfield.
Fofana’s Hopes Dented
Valued at around €50m, Fofana has openly admitted his future at Lyon is uncertain:
“If I stay at OL? Trick question. In football, anything can happen. If I stay, it will be with happiness, but if a good opportunity comes, we’ll see.”
Lyon remain open to offers but insist any sale must meet their valuation. Newcastle United are monitoring the situation, with suggestions they could become a stepping stone for the winger before a future move to Europe’s elite.
Liverpool’s Balancing Act
The Reds have already secured eight new signings this summer, including Marc Guehi and Alexander Isak, and are still weighing up defensive reinforcements. But with Chiesa committed to staying, Liverpool may postpone adding another winger — effectively ending Fofana’s Anfield dream for now.
