BREAKING FROM MADRID

Reports in Spain suggest that Xabi Alonso, who is already shaping his tactical blueprint

for Real Madrid’s future, has outlined five strict demands that Trent Alexander-Arnold must meet if he is ever to cement himself as the permanent starter ahead of Dani Carvajal.

Carvajal remains a legend at Madrid experienced, disciplined, and battle-tested in the Champions League. For Arnold to not just challenge him, but to bench him “for life,” Alonso believes these five things are non-negotiable:

The 5 Demands from Alonso to Arnold

Defensive Solidity Arnold must prove he can defend one-on-one against elite wingers. Alonso insists that defensive positioning, tracking back, and discipline without the ball are key areas he must sharpen to match Carvajal’s reliability.

Consistency at the Top Level It’s not enough to shine occasionally. Arnold will need to deliver 7/10 or higher performances every week, especially in La Liga’s toughest fixtures and Champions League nights.

Tactical Adaptability Alonso wants a right-back who can shift roles depending on the match: overlap, invert into midfield, or even tuck inside defensively. Arnold must show he can follow tactical instructions with precision.

Work Rate & Fitness Carvajal’s relentless stamina has been his trademark. Arnold will need to match that energy running the flanks for 90 minutes, staying injury-free, and proving his endurance across an entire season.

. Leadership Mentality Beyond skill, Alonso demands mentality. Arnold must show he can handle the pressure of the Bernabéu, communicate effectively with teammates, and embody the winning spirit Madrid expects.

Carvajal won’t give up his place easily, but if Arnold ticks all these boxes, he could eventually become Madrid’s undisputed right-back for the future.
