Liverpool remain strongly interested in Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi, but the club is proceeding with caution following mixed messages from the South London side about his future.
The England international, whose contract runs out next summer, has been identified as a key target to strengthen Liverpool’s defence. However, the Reds are mindful of not overpaying, knowing there’s a chance they could secure him for free in twelve months.
Crystal Palace face a tricky situation. Chairman Steve Parish acknowledged that player sales are sometimes unavoidable due to financial regulations. At the same time, manager Oliver Glasner stressed that losing Guéhi this late in the window would be a huge blow, especially after the recent £67.5m sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal.
Palace must now decide whether to cash in at a lower price or risk losing Guéhi for nothing next year. The club previously turned down bids around £70m, but with only a year left on his deal, his valuation has dropped to between £30–45m.
Following Palace’s Europa Conference League win over Fredrikstad, Glasner highlighted Guéhi’s importance, joking:
“If Marc leaves, maybe I’ll have to dust off my boots since I used to play centre-back. It’s about the future of the club — we need depth in the squad.”
Liverpool, meanwhile, continue to weigh up their approach. They value Guéhi’s composure, aerial ability, and leadership qualities, but will not meet an inflated asking price. Despite heavy spending this summer, the Reds still have funds available after several departures.
There is a possibility Liverpool could pursue both Guéhi and Newcastle striker Alexander Isak before the window closes. Still, they are also prepared to wait until next summer to sign Guéhi as a free agent — though they know competition for his signature would be intense.
