Football journalist David Ornstein has reported that a transfer for Alexander Isak to Liverpool remains “possible” during the final week of the summer transfer window.
The Newcastle United striker is currently in limbo after reportedly going on strike to push for a move to Anfield. Isak did not feature in Newcastle’s 3-2 defeat to Liverpool at St James’ Park last night, highlighting the ongoing tension surrounding his future.
Earlier in August, Newcastle rejected a £110 million offer from Liverpool and have stated they will not sell Isak before the transfer deadline unless manager Eddie Howe secures new attacking reinforcements first.
Ornstein’s Insight on Isak’s Future
In the latest edition of The Athletic’s Transfer DealSheet, Ornstein provided an update on Isak’s situation. He noted that clarity about the striker’s future is expected in the coming days now that Newcastle’s match against Liverpool has concluded.
Ornstein wrote: “Newcastle’s stance is well documented – they do not intend to sell the Sweden international – but their search for potential reinforcements could change that position. The club continues to pursue Yoane Wissa and Jorgen Strand Larsen, while other options are also being considered. If Newcastle manage to strengthen adequately and Liverpool make an offer deemed suitable, a transfer could happen before the deadline. However, there are many ‘ifs’ and no guarantees – this could go right down to the wire.”
Countdown to Deadline
As the transfer window nears its end, Newcastle face pressure to sign a striker if they cannot reintegrate Isak into Howe’s squad. Meanwhile, Liverpool may consider submitting a second offer before the window closes next Monday.
Both clubs may feel relieved that last night’s fixture is over, as it had added intensity to the ongoing saga involving the 25-year-old striker. His future is expected to remain a talking point until the transfer deadline.
Should Liverpool succeed in securing Isak, the Reds would strengthen an already potent attack with a striker who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, second only to Mo Salah.
